NSA Wales & Border Ram Sale Championships

23rd September 2019

The story so far ....

A Charollais ram lamb from Dewi Pritchard Evans’s Ffrwd flock took the overall championship. The December born lamb is one of five ram lambs the Anglesey breeder brought to the NSA Wales & Border Sale.

It’s his first championship in the ten years he has been selling at Builth. The lamb won the Interbreed Championship at Anglesey Show. Dewi who runs 30 pedigree Charollais ewes enjoys support what he describes as a ‘good commercial sale’.

Judging the Texel Birth Notified classes was Rhayader Texel breeder and entertainer, Geoff Evans of the Twerzels. He complimented the standard of ‘lovely sheep, good rams’ .

Geoff runs 120 pedigree ewes at Pant y Dwr and for the last ten years has performed with the Twerzels, raising considerable amounts for charity. He has brought rams to the sale every year since the sale began in 1978 and says it’s also an opportunity ‘to meet old friends you only see once a year’.

Texel Champion

The Texel championship was won by a shearling ram bred by Gregor and Bruce Ingham. The family have been bringing Logie Durno tups to the sale for 20 years. This year they brought 61 rams from five different breeds, including six shearling Texels.

The family are also regulars at the Royal Welsh Show and this year took the Champion Charollais, the Champion Suffolk, the Interbreed Pairs and the Interbreed Ram Lamb.

The Torddu Championship was won by a ewe lamb shown by Gareth Jones of Felingwm, Carmarthen, who runs the GHJ flock. He brought 16 Torddu and Torwen ewe lambs, ewes and ram lambs to the sale.

The Torwen Championship went to a ram lamb from Sara and Cerys Brown. The Bro Myrddin students run 20 Torwen ewes and 20 Torddu ewes at home with their parents.

Judge Katie Smith who runs the Arkland flock said the champion, a ram lamb from McClymont & Son, was very correct, with plenty of bone. She praised the very good show of sheep and said it had been a tough job selecting the champion.
