Choice Rams in Hereford and Brecon

22nd July 2025

There will be plenty of choice for buyers in England and Wales at the NSA Wales & Border Early Sales.  Vendors have responded with a range of top quality rams entered for sale at the Brecon sale on 4th August and at Hereford on 5th August.

The organizers have arranged the second sale at Hereford in order to help flockmasters cope with bluetongue regulations. It will save expense and time by accommodating sheep farmers on both sides of the border.  The sale in Brecon has attracted 190 entries, while the Hereford sale has attracted 64. The Brecon sale will comprise 94 Charollais, 34 Texels, 28 Suffolks and the cross breds. The sale will start with the Charollais Society sale at 10.30am.

The Hereford sale will start at 1pm on 5th August and comprises Texels, Suffolks, Poll Dorset and cross breds. The sale will commence at 1pm.  The sale will be conducted by auctioneers McCartneys and Clee Tompkinson in Brecon and by
Hereford Market Auctioneer in Hereford.  The pre-movement testing for bluetongue in livestock
moving from England into Wales costs an estimated £60 to £70 per animal.

The NSA Wales & Border Early Ram Sale is especially important for early lambing flocks and
traditionally a trailblazer for the tup selling season. Last year was the first at Brecon and saw
a solid stream of high prices and individual consigner averages. Averages were up by almost
£200, with two rams each fetching a top price of 2,000 guineas and an 83% clearance was the
highest ever.
